My Dear Horst!
I have already responded to your letters of the 18th and 21st of August. Now I am writing again because the 4th and 5th packages arrived for us. Thsee two packages were stamped in Canada on the 6th and 13th of September; they took about 9-10 weeks to get here. The 5 of us are thinking of you with thanks and have been as happy as children over all the good things you sent. (more…)

Mein lieber Horst!
Deine beiden Briefe vom 18. u. 21.8.47 habe ich bereits beantwortet. Nun will ich gleich wieder schreiben, nachdem auch das 4. u. 5. Großpaket bei uns eingetroffen sind. Die beiden Pakete tragen den kanadischen Abgangsstempel 6. bez. 13. September 47; sie sind an einem Tage hier angekommen und waren demzufolge 9-10 Wochen auf der Fahrt nach hier. (more…)

Lieber Horst!
Deinen Brief per Luftpost vom 25.3.47, abgestempelt in Toronto am 9.4.47, ist am 23.4.47 bei uns eingegangen, derselbe ist also in 14 Tagen von Dir zu uns geflogen. Mit der Luftpost ist die Beförderung eben eine bessere als mit der gewöhnlichen Post. Habe recht herzlichen Dank dafür. (more…)

Horst Doehler (seated)was only 20 years old when he and his friend Richard Krumsdorf (the photographer) landed in Halifax, Canada at Pier 21 with $80 and dreams of homesteading and adventure. The year was 1930.

I can trace things back beyond Karl May but I will start out by saying how glad I am that my grandfather, who I never met, Opa Curt ‘Clemens’ Doehler, gave my father Horst Doehler a novel about adventure and fun in North America. That random act may have saved my father’s life – it inspired him to go to Canada in 1930, thus saving him from the eventual war and giving him the chance to marry 2 Canadian women in succession and produce 4 children, one of whom is me, Flora Doehler.
